Cambly - Teaching Conversational English To Foreigners
Hi there,
Today I"m going to review Cambly, which is an online English conversation platform. It's designed to assist foreigners in learning English, by allowing them to have live video conversations with native English speakers from all over the world. They have the ability to 'call' tutors who are shown as online and can usually pick and choose the one they want.
As one of the tutors myself, I can vouch for their reliability with payment and the fact that it can be lucrative. But I'm sure you're wondering, how does it work?
First off, you need to apply to become a tutor on the website. You'll need to fill out a profile, describing your level of fluency in English, as well as the level of English you are comfortable teaching. If you don't handle beginners very well, uncheck the box.
Having a TEFL or teaching certificate may help you with your application as they aren't always hiring. They accept many applications and already have over 2000 tutors working, so I can't guarantee you will be accepted. Nonetheless, it is definitely worth trying to get in.
After filling in your profile and placing a profile picture, you'll need to record a short 30 second video introducing yourself as a tutor. If you just want to converse with people from around the world, say so in your video. If you're qualified and want to teach students, say so. Be friendly, upbeat and show enthusiasm and that too will assist you in getting accepted.
Pay works like this. When you first start out, you will need to book hour long shifts, called Priority Hours. You are paid $10, 20 per hour that you actually spend talking to students. If you don't speak to anybody, you'll still get $2,5 for the hour. Most people are able to earn between $100 and $200 per week by putting in at least 20 hours.
Payday is every Monday and you will be paid into Paypal as long as your balance is above $20 and they're usually on time with payments.
Once you've been tutoring for a few weeks, you'll notice that you now have a rating. This rating, which you should strive to keep above 4,8 (out of 5) is determined by students giving you a rating after conversing with them. Not everybody will rate you and the score rises very slowly, but once you've got your score above 4,85, which is the tutor average, you'll find that you have more access to Priority Hours and can most likely book them about a month in advance.
After tutoring for a while, you'll find that students will start making reservations with you and these are the type of students you want. If they book you for an hour, you're guaranteed $10. If they book two hours; $20, and so on and so forth. Once you get regulars your income will increase substantially.
The schedule is very flexible and you can pretty much book and remove hours as you see fit. To cancel a Priority Hour, however, make sure it is 12 or more hours in advance or your available hours will be affected and you may be blocked from Priority Hours for up to a week.
Lastly, you don't need to book Priority Hours. You can simply log in, and select the "visible" button, which will allow students who are online to call you. This works for some people, but most of us book Priority Hours as you're guaranteed something.
So that's my review of Cambly. I hope you enjoyed it and if you want to sign up yourself, here is a link: https://www.cambly.com/en/tutors?referralCode=dean19
Have a great day and good luck in your quest to find paying work from home jobs.
